The girls are learning to step into new roles and quickly learning that we are not the same team as we were in the fall. We have had our ups and downs losing players to concussions for a couple of weeks, some sick with strep and the flu, and pulled muscles. At times we only had 12 girls playing. But the girls are striving to be better each day in their meetings, at practice, and in games! They are growing closer to one another and using every opportunity to be better.
Hawaii, Disneyland, San Diego,......even the Dominican Republic?!?! Every year in the school year the girls get a chance to take a week off and relax. The term is often referred to as Spring Break. Have you ever heard of it?? Just kidding! Of course you have! Spring Break 2013.....Whoooooo!

Well, this Spring Break was filled with many different trips and different adventures! Let's hear some experiences from girls on the team!

Last week I had the chance to spend my spring break with 8 of some of my best friends and teammates! Our adventure started early on Saturday morning as Kendra, Lex, Taryn, Ash and I piled into one car and Ky, Shay, Mari and Shay's sister rode in the other! Expecting a nice drive, we were shocked when we nearly died in a snow storm for half the week. But we finally made it to California and were simply just excited to lay on the grass and enjoy the sun! Our week was jam-packed with tons of different adventures! It started off with riding tandem beach cruisers from beach to beach. Trust me, it is not as easy as we make it look in the picture! We crashed and made idiots of ourselves for most of the time! The rest of the week was followed by walking around China Town, street vendors and shopping. Shay, Mari, Ky, Lex, Taryn and I took at trip to explore the Happiest Place on Earth! That was an adventure in and of itself! All the rides, screaming, laughter! We finished off the second half of the week with going to foggy beaches and seeing the famous Hollywood! Saturday morning we said our goodbyes and headed back to good old Logan! So to sum up my first time to Cali... I cant wait to go back! I had so much fun and made so many memories with some of the best people!

I went to Hawaii for Spring Break with my roommates. One of my roommates moms lives in Kailua on Ohau, so we got to stay with her for free! Pretty much, we crammed as much as we could into that one week we were there. We did tons of awesome hikes and hit up all the different beaches and hitch-hiked everywhere...haha it's like a normal thing to do there. But besides the night we hiked stairway to heaven (a super sketch hike.... way scary) and didn't have lights and got lost in the forest for awhile, the trip went smoothly. At the beach the water was so warm. Me and one of my roommates were out for a morning run on the beach and decided to just jump in for a morning swim, then run back home! It seriously was the best. I'm also happy to have gotten my freckles back, they have been sorely missed :)

My favorite experience in the Dominican Republic is one of the days when I was at the orphanage a little girl named Damilka came up to me during lunch and slipped me a little note covered in hearts. Inside it read "Hambry (which is what they all called me) you shine like the star that I know you are." This is coming from a little child whose mother was a prostitute and left her to fend for herself at the age of 2. The Ark ( which is the orphanage) found her at age 3 huddled in a closet sick and near death. This little girl went out of her way to make me feel special when she is the one who should be getting notes. We grew very close and were best friends by the end of my trip. As I was leaving I was carrying her around on my back and she kept saying something in Spanish that I didn't understand over and over again. My friend who was fluent then told me that she just kept saying "You're my best friend please take me with you. Don't leave me" it was an amazing experience and one that ill never forget. I'm so blessed to have gotten this opportunity and am hoping to go back next year.
Time sure does fly by. And there are 3 people who would most certainly agree. We have had the honor of having these 3 seniors as part of the Utah State program for the past four years. They are one of the winningest classes in Utah State history with a 44-23-14 record so far. They are also part of the first class to win a WAC Tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament. We wanted to highlight each senior by recognizing their accomplishments, reminiscing about memories, and by asking their two other classmates about each other.
Kami Montgomery is from Orem, Utah who has seen action all four seasons that she has been an Aggie. She has also been involved in numerous community service events across the Cache Valley.
She has been playing soccer since she was 8 years old. At first, she didn't really consider Utah State. Once her friend, Shantel Flanary, told her that she had committed, Kami started her communication with Coach Heather Cairns about recruiting. She came on an unofficial visit and was sold. She fell in love with the campus and knew it was the place for her. She got to come up to Logan a lot during her senior year in high school and spend time with the team. This confirmed her decision.
Being a senior, Kami has had some fond memories: "I loved Seattle my freshman year, we got to go to the space needle and see all sorts of neat stuff. I also went to an aquarium (it is my dream to be a marine biologist so I loved seeing the sea animals). We also went to the Saturdays market which was really fun. We played University of Washington and Molli Merrill stopped a sick penalty kick! The weekend was full of funny moments (our assistant coach Josh pulled into his parking spot really fast and popped the van tire) and it just made for a great weekend. I also loved Portland my Sr. year because it was the first and only road trip my mom got to be there for so it was fun spending time with her and I fulfilled my dream of riding a tandem near a body of water!!! I got to go to the Saturdays market and ride the tandem around the river. It was a blast!"
Ashlyn Mulford is from Bountiful, Utah, majoring in art and waited patiently for her time to shine. In her senior season, she has been a major part of the tough Aggie defense. She has earned WAC Goalkeeper Player of the Week a team-high five times this season. Mulford has 7.5 shutouts this season, playing almost 1500 minutes. She is on the verge of setting the USU record for lowest goals against average with her current 0.50 GAA.
Its too hard to choose! Dang...Hawaii probably wins. The International market is so sweet. Purchased my authentic Hawaiian Uke. Got to swim with some sea turtles out in the ocean, and also got to try surfing (and no i couldn't do it). Ha. Apart from all the great places though it didn't really matter where we were. Whether it be El Paso or Hawaii it was always a blast because i got to be with like 20 of my best and closest friends. Being with my team is what made each place a great experience. We could find a way to have fun anywhere!"
The Aggies are now 5-1-3 this season, earning a tie for the second straight match after tying Portland State 0-0 last week.

Coach Cairns challenged the girls this week. "I challenged the team this week and asked them who is going to step up and who is going to make a difference. We had a handful, tons of kids. I could praise every single player that stepped on the field and that is what it is going to take to win a Western Athletic Conference championship, and I feel like we've made great strides," USU head coach Heather Cairns said.

Congratulations girls! Now lets go get them Cougs!
Aggies have been so hard at work on the soccer field this past weekend! We came back from Portland with a win against Eastern Washington and a tie against Portland State. The Ags improve to 5-1-1. Good job ladies!

We mentioned before, that we would post some thoughts from the freshman about their first day of class. Let's be honest, we have all been there before! Being the new fresh meat to a school. It is an experience in itself.
I went an hour early because I was scared I wouldn't find my classes. I was thirty minutes early to class... I am definitely not used to huge classes and the teachers not knowing me. I am used to knowing everyone's life story and being best friends with my teachers. But, it turned out to be really great. Interior design is really interesting and it's nice to meet new people everyday! I am getting the hang of it and am starting to love it! - Jamie Duke

My first day of college was literally great! You could say I was pretty scared and didn't really know how to use the shuttle system, or know where any of my classes were, but I figured it out by the end of the day. I feel like a big girl doing things on my own, but I still sent my mother i picture of my first-day-of-school outfit! I'm pretty sure she cried. -Kaitlyn Wilcox
Well my first day of school was actually rather fun! However, me and maris woke up late, literally rolled out of bed and left our room. Except there was a slight problem we hadn't thought of, and that was we didn't know how to use the shuttle system. we immediately called Nano for some assistance. But by the time we figured it out we were way late to class. Yes, our first day of class we were twenty minutes late! But after that little incident we didn't have to much of a problem finding our classes. But, school was fun I had a lot of homies in my classes, and they were passing out free ice cream! And you can bet I took them up on that offer, especially cause I didn't have time for break feast! well any who, my first day of school was quite confusing, yet thrilling all at the same time! -Lexie Henrie
My first day of college was much better than I thought it would be. I was terrified the night before that I wouldn’t be able to make it on time to my second class, or that I would walk into the wrong class. Every bad thing that could possibly happen went through my head that night. Once I got to school though it wasn’t bad at all. All my nerves went away and it just seemed like it was normal. Luckily I didn’t get lost and I took the correct shuttle. College is a lot different than high school, that’s for sure. My classes are pretty big so it is weird that I am not able to see all my friends that are in my same class. So far I like college a lot! -Natalie Stoven
The Aggies returned home last night from their road trip to Nebraska. The Ags returned with a win and a tie, improving them to 3-0-1. The girls have little down time because today is their first day of school! Even though school is school, the girls are sure to be excited to get back to the social scene. Stay tuned for a blurb on the freshman's first day of college! But until then, here are some pictures of some adventures the girls had leading up to their first day back to school!

It was a fabulous week full of passing, dribbling, shooting, and of course a lot of "I'm a Star" jumps and popsicles! The coaching staff enjoyed the young enthusiasm and the campers enjoyed a great soccer atmosphere. What a great way to kick off preseason!!!
As most of you know, we went 5-1-1 in conference earning the WAC Regular Season Championship...with our last day being on Senior Day where we recognized five of our seniors: Shantel Flanary, Molli Merrill, Chandra Salmon-Christensen, Marissa Sanchez, and Summer Tillotson. We then went on to sweep the WAC awards at the WAC banquet with five players earning 1st Team All-WAC, two players earning 2nd Team ALL-WAC, and coaches of the WAC voted the following awards to members of USU Soccer: Freshman of the Year (Taryn Rose), Defensive Player of the Year (Natalie Norris), Offensive Player of the Year (Shantel Flanary) and Coach of the Year (Heather Cairns). Then the team went on to perform an "on the field" sweep of the WAC Tournament beating Fresno State in the finals 1-0 with goal by freshman Jade Tarver, earning the program's first NCAA appearance! We played Auburn University in Auburn, AL with a strong showing for our first round of the NCAA tournament. We lost 2-1, with goal scored by Kendra Pemberton. Every member of our USU Soccer family came away this season extremely proud of our accomplishments and hungry for more in the upcoming seasons! Thank you to all of our fans, family, friends and fellow Aggies for your support this season!

Senior Weekend

WAC Tournament

NCAA Tournament 1st Round
USU Aggie Soccerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15189926891791355842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7537475750582067513.post-31970575448235874842011-11-07T11:31:00.005-07:002011-11-07T13:30:50.695-07:00WAC Regular Season and Tournament Champs....We're going to the BIG DANCE aka NCAAs!

We did it! On Friday, the Aggies shut out New Mexico State with a 2-0 win with goals by Kendra Pemberton and Shantel Flanary. Sunday, the Aggies rallied another win, beating Louisiana Tech 3-1 with two goals by Kendra Pemberton and one goal by Mari Miyashiro. The two back to back wins helped Kendra Pemberton and Molli Merrill earn WAC Athlete of the Week awards!! It was a great weekend! I was soooo excited to go home and play in front of all my friends and family. But as coach said, work first then we can have a day of fun after. So on Thursday we landed in the beautifully humid state of Hawaii and had some luggage trouble. But eventually we got all that figured out and headed to Waipio for practice. As soon as we started warming up, a toad got the attention of all the girls and we all stopped to watch as it hopped away. After practice we headed to my house for some yummy pasta that my mom, dad, sister, and aunties helped prepare. Next day was game day! But we had a bunch of time to kill before the game so we walked around the International Marketplace to do some shopping then headed out to "Da Shack" in Mililani to watch our football boys play BYU. Then it was finally game time! The first half didn't exactly go the way we wanted. Although we had chances, we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. Hawaii was able to and was up 1-0 in the first half. My family, friends, aunties, and uncles were already there with tents set up and brought two paddle boards, one surf board, and one kayak. The girls just went out on the boards and learned how to surf and paddle board on their own. Then we had some ono (delicious) lunch and headed to Matsumoto's for their famous shaved ice! After it was off to the airport to head back to Utah. Hawaii was so much fun! The only problem was was that the trip was six hours long (and that was just the flight!) luckily our good old red headed friend lo had packed us a snack for the plane ride. banana was the flavor of the every thing in the bag, unless you ate it fast enough which fishy was the only one who figured out, but still the food was all eaten within minutes of the flight! it saved us from starving to death because when we landed in Hawaii, Kendra's suitcase was nowhere to be found. We waited and waited and still no sign of the bag, but Kendra had her cleats in her carry on luckily. Once we decided that Kendra's things were not showing up any time soon we went to practice. After practice we went to our beautiful Mari's house and ate like animals! There was so much food. It was all amazing and by the time we were all done we were stuffed. Then there was dessert... and if you know our team, no one says no to dessert no matter how full. Never. Mornings in hawaii were amazing... even if they included an 8am jog, because here we could do it on the beach! After study hall we took to the streets for some shopping and the beach. Kendra found a swim suit (since hers was in her lost suitcase) while other people went to the international market and the most popular item that was bought were those brown sandal shoes. I’m pretty sure 85% of our team got them and they are soooooo comfy. On the way to our game, we stopped to watch the football team play BYU., then away to the field for our game we went. Sadly we lost in the second over time off of a corner kick 2-1. The team was upset but we knew we needed to bounce back from this loss and start preparing for our next WAC game against New Mexico State. On Saturday, we met Mari’s family at the beach where we got to play on the beach ALL day and Mari’s family made us amazing food on the beach and brought us surf boards to attempt to use. We were able to swim with some sea turtles and take TONS of pictures! Once we were all hot, we stopped by a sno cone shack which had the best snow cones of any place i have ever been... and i have been to a lot of snow cone places in my day. By the end of the beach day everyone was a little burnt and tired. We headed back to Logan where we prepped for our two home games the next weekend!
USU Aggie Soccerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15189926891791355842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7537475750582067513.post-31177366877140512552011-09-07T11:18:00.001-06:002011-09-07T11:18:56.792-06:00Another Exciting Weekend!Another exciting weekend for Aggie Soccer! The Aggies beat Utah on Friday 1-0 with goal by Mari Miyashiro off of a Utah goalkeeper deflection, and then the Aggies took down Cal State Fullerton on Sunday with a rocket shot by Kendra Pemberton in double over time. For the first time in Utah State soccer history, the team is regionally ranked in the West region. It is an exciting time, and there's more to come! Stay tuned....

History is being made this season, and especially from this weekend's trip! It started off well and finished even better. We left Thursday like usual with the flight being only about an hour, so wasn't bad at all. After checking into the hotel in Colorado we headed over to the field at Colorado College. A fun fact Coach told us was that girls' soccer and men's hockey are the only D1 sports for CC, the rest are D3. After training we went to a little local Italian place that was delicious. The next day was game day! We had a rough first half but held it together with a little luck, we came out at half 0-0. We then picked it up and scored two goals in the second half. I had an assist that was flicked on by Kendra to Jenn who had a rocket of a shot! Then a few minutes later Kendra had the perfect ball across the box that I just had to put in easily. Molli had an amazing save off a pk, what a stud! They had a goal just after that but we were able to hang on for the 2-1 victory! Afterwards, we enjoyed some Italian food with family. On Saturday we drove through Garden of Gods before we left Colorado Springs and took some pictures because it was absolutely beautiful! We arrived in Greeley and had a little training, then enjoyed dinner at Johnny Carino's and celebrated Kylie's birthday who turned 18! On Sunday, we played Northern Colorado and we were able to win again 2-1 to make USU history by starting 4-0!! And from that record earning our first ever regional ranking at #9!! We got back to Logan at a decent hour and enjoyed driving into town with a blue "A" and history in the making!!
