Reflecting back on my soccer career and experience here at Utah State brings so many memories to mind, both on and off the field. Though I will NEVER forget the unreal feeling of being a part of the team that took home EVERY trophy possible at the banquet (including the one at the end of the week that came with plane tickets to Alabama and the NCAA tourney!).... but shockingly most of my fondest memories aren't games or awards they really are the everyday ups and downs that I got to go through with some of my best friends, and those rough times or funny times or AWESOME times are the times that stick with me, those are the memories that are the most important to me. It is crazy that you can spend 4 years with a random bunch of girls from all different backgrounds and teams and feel like you have spent a lifetime with them, and it is because of how much we have grown together as a team, and I sincerely think that that, our team unity and camaraderie, is what directly impacted how successful we were this year!! I LOVE IT! I love all of it! Crazy fitness stories, pranks, making haunted houses, hormonal/ultra competitive practices, hilarious boy stories, eating food ALL THE TIME on trips, aqua-popping, Just Dance, Waking up at 5 for weights in the spring, Beto's greasy yet delicious burritos, TWIZZLE BERRY (double punch tues), preseason spent 50% in dorms and the other 50% in the ice bath... all of it. I feel that I wouldn't trade my soccer experience up here at USU for anything. It has been awesome, I feel so blessed and am SO grateful. Thank you. Love you all.

An Exciting End...

What an exciting last four-five weeks for Aggie Soccer! As most of you know, we went 5-1-1 in conference earning the WAC Regular Season Championship...with our last day being on Senior Day where we recognized five of our seniors: Shantel Flanary, Molli Merrill, Chandra Salmon-Christensen, Marissa Sanchez, and Summer Tillotson. We then went on to sweep the WAC awards at the WAC banquet with five players earning 1st Team All-WAC, two players earning 2nd Team ALL-WAC, and coaches of the WAC voted the following awards to members of USU Soccer: Freshman of the Year (Taryn Rose), Defensive Player of the Year (Natalie Norris), Offensive Player of the Year (Shantel Flanary) and Coach of the Year (Heather Cairns). Then the team went on to perform an "on the field" sweep of the WAC Tournament beating Fresno State in the finals 1-0 with goal by freshman Jade Tarver, earning the program's first NCAA appearance! We played Auburn University in Auburn, AL with a strong showing for our first round of the NCAA tournament. We lost 2-1, with goal scored by Kendra Pemberton. Every member of our USU Soccer family came away this season extremely proud of our accomplishments and hungry for more in the upcoming seasons! Thank you to all of our fans, family, friends and fellow Aggies for your support this season!

We did it! The team earned both the WAC regular season title as well as the WAC Tournament title and we have earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament! NCAA bracket comes out today at 2:30pm and can be viewed at NCAA.com. Way to go Aggies!

Finally Home!

This past weekend, the team enjoyed a weekend at home with two conference games against New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech. On Friday, the Aggies shut out New Mexico State with a 2-0 win with goals by Kendra Pemberton and Shantel Flanary. Sunday, the Aggies rallied another win, beating Louisiana Tech 3-1 with two goals by Kendra Pemberton and one goal by Mari Miyashiro. The two back to back wins helped Kendra Pemberton and Molli Merrill earn WAC Athlete of the Week awards!! It was a great weekend! Aggies face University of Nevada, Reno on Sunday in Reno.

First game of WAC was played in my home town, HAWAII. I was soooo excited to go home and play in front of all my friends and family. But as coach said, work first then we can have a day of fun after. So on Thursday we landed in the beautifully humid state of Hawaii and had some luggage trouble. But eventually we got all that figured out and headed to Waipio for practice. As soon as we started warming up, a toad got the attention of all the girls and we all stopped to watch as it hopped away. After practice we headed to my house for some yummy pasta that my mom, dad, sister, and aunties helped prepare. Next day was game day! But we had a bunch of time to kill before the game so we walked around the International Marketplace to do some shopping then headed out to "Da Shack" in Mililani to watch our football boys play BYU. Then it was finally game time! The first half didn't exactly go the way we wanted. Although we had chances, we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. Hawaii was able to and was up 1-0 in the first half. We came out in the second half and had an awesome goal scored by our very own Lexie Morgan. Unfortunately things didn't go our way and we lost in the second over time.

The next day we packed up and headed to Haleiwa Alii Beach Park for some fun in the sun! My family, friends, aunties, and uncles were already there with tents set up and brought two paddle boards, one surf board, and one kayak. The girls just went out on the boards and learned how to surf and paddle board on their own. Then we had some ono (delicious) lunch and headed to Matsumoto's for their famous shaved ice! After it was off to the airport to head back to Utah. Hawaii was so much fun! We didn't get the result we were hoping for but everyone worked their behinds off and now its time to work at practice and prepare for our next game!

So the time had finally come for the team again to travel to paradise! The only problem was was that the trip was six hours long (and that was just the flight!) luckily our good old red headed friend lo had packed us a snack for the plane ride. banana was the flavor of the every thing in the bag, unless you ate it fast enough which fishy was the only one who figured out, but still the food was all eaten within minutes of the flight! it saved us from starving to death because when we landed in Hawaii, Kendra's suitcase was nowhere to be found. We waited and waited and still no sign of the bag, but Kendra had her cleats in her carry on luckily. Once we decided that Kendra's things were not showing up any time soon we went to practice. After practice we went to our beautiful Mari's house and ate like animals! There was so much food. It was all amazing and by the time we were all done we were stuffed. Then there was dessert... and if you know our team, no one says no to dessert no matter how full. Never. Mornings in hawaii were amazing... even if they included an 8am jog, because here we could do it on the beach! After study hall we took to the streets for some shopping and the beach. Kendra found a swim suit (since hers was in her lost suitcase) while other people went to the international market and the most popular item that was bought were those brown sandal shoes. I’m pretty sure 85% of our team got them and they are soooooo comfy. On the way to our game, we stopped to watch the football team play BYU., then away to the field for our game we went. Sadly we lost in the second over time off of a corner kick 2-1. The team was upset but we knew we needed to bounce back from this loss and start preparing for our next WAC game against New Mexico State. On Saturday, we met Mari’s family at the beach where we got to play on the beach ALL day and Mari’s family made us amazing food on the beach and brought us surf boards to attempt to use. We were able to swim with some sea turtles and take TONS of pictures! Once we were all hot, we stopped by a sno cone shack which had the best snow cones of any place i have ever been... and i have been to a lot of snow cone places in my day. By the end of the beach day everyone was a little burnt and tired. We headed back to Logan where we prepped for our two home games the next weekend!

Another exciting weekend for Aggie Soccer! The Aggies beat Utah on Friday 1-0 with goal by Mari Miyashiro off of a Utah goalkeeper deflection, and then the Aggies took down Cal State Fullerton on Sunday with a rocket shot by Kendra Pemberton in double over time. For the first time in Utah State soccer history, the team is regionally ranked in the West region. It is an exciting time, and there's more to come! Stay tuned....

COLORADO TRIP by Shantel Flanary

History is being made this season, and especially from this weekend's trip! It started off well and finished even better. We left Thursday like usual with the flight being only about an hour, so wasn't bad at all. After checking into the hotel in Colorado we headed over to the field at Colorado College. A fun fact Coach told us was that girls' soccer and men's hockey are the only D1 sports for CC, the rest are D3. After training we went to a little local Italian place that was delicious. The next day was game day! We had a rough first half but held it together with a little luck, we came out at half 0-0. We then picked it up and scored two goals in the second half. I had an assist that was flicked on by Kendra to Jenn who had a rocket of a shot! Then a few minutes later Kendra had the perfect ball across the box that I just had to put in easily. Molli had an amazing save off a pk, what a stud! They had a goal just after that but we were able to hang on for the 2-1 victory! Afterwards, we enjoyed some Italian food with family. On Saturday we drove through Garden of Gods before we left Colorado Springs and took some pictures because it was absolutely beautiful! We arrived in Greeley and had a little training, then enjoyed dinner at Johnny Carino's and celebrated Kylie's birthday who turned 18! On Sunday, we played Northern Colorado and we were able to win again 2-1 to make USU history by starting 4-0!! And from that record earning our first ever regional ranking at #9!! We got back to Logan at a decent hour and enjoyed driving into town with a blue "A" and history in the making!!

We are still alive and kickin'!

Preseason is finished! The girls did a great job getting through double days and gearing up for season. They were able to take a few breaks with our preseason retreat to Bear Lake along with a trip to the Logan Aquatic Center to cool off, a team mini-golf tournament, and community service at Centro De La Familia De Utah where they had to opportunity to play with infants and toddlers who attend the school as well as help with organizing closets, the school library, and anything else that was needed at the school. The girls had a great time and were a huge help to the school!

Preseason Video!

Here's a quick update on the season... USU Soccer has had its best start in the program's history with a record of 4-0 winning our first four game, three which were "on the road" (blog post on our most recent trip to Colorado coming soon!). Our first game was at Rio Tinto Stadium where we beat Weber State 1-0! It was great to be back at our home away from home. The staff and Rio Tinto does a great job making sure that both teams are taken care of....and the field, as always, was exciting to play on! Our home opener was against Portland State where we took a 2-1 victory over the PSU! We are very excited for this season as we have several tough opponents ahead in our next four matchups, which are all home games! We play Utah this Friday at 4pm, Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 1pm, then Thursday the 8th we play Rice at 4pm and Sunday the 11th we play Idaho State at 1pm. Hope to see you out there!

Camps were a success this year! A grand total of 196 kids attended the three camps this summer, which also included 8 teams from the Cache Valley and Salt Lake City. USU's Sanchez Attends NCAA Career in Sports Forum

USU Soccer senior, Marissa Sanchez, was invited to attend the NCAA Career in Sports Forum held in Indianapolis in June. The forum was an opportunity for students athletes from around the country learn about different aspects of careers, specifically within intercollegiate athletics. It also helped student athletes examine their personal values and the opportunities that may have in sports. Each student-athlete developed a plan for growth and career development and will have the opportunity to network. Here is Marissa’s reflection on the NCAA forum:

"Going into the Career in Sports Forum I had the mindset of just seeing what the possibilities of Sports Administration was about; yet I was lucky to leave the Forum knowing this was the track I wanted to take as a future career for me. I learned so much from the Forum and it helped solidify my decision of pursuing a Masters in this area and making it a goal to find a career within this that I know I will love. My favorite part of the forum was hearing all the personal stories from the guest speakers and how they got to where they are now. I learned the importance of networking, volunteering, internships, and how to use my step up I have in college athletics already to my advantage. I met amazing people and learned from so many different perspectives what Sports Administration is about. There are so many different paths I can take and I'm excited to figure out the exact path I want to take in it. I already favor continuing to be part of college athletics because of the benefits it's provided me in my education and future career goals; but the other possibilities are still endless. I was lucky to be a part of the NCAA Career in Sports Forum and would recommend it to anyone who considers the path of Sports Administration as a possible career choice."

Incoming Freshman Winning State Championships!

Our 2011 Freshman are leaving marks in the club and high school soccer world as well as the track world.

In the month of May, Brooke Larsen's high school track team won the state title with Brooke running the 400m, 4X100m relay, 4X400 meter relay, and the medley relay....earning points for the school in ALL four events! Click here to see the article about Springville's State Title!

Also in May, Jade Tarver, Lexi Morgan and Ambryn McCallson's club team, Sparta, won the Utah Youth Soccer Association State Cup tournament and will travel to Regionals in Boise in two weeks! (Good luck ladies!)

And last but not least, Kassidi Nudd came up big with a huge save in the 2nd half of the State of Illinois 2A High School finals to help her team to a 2-1 victory winning Triad High School's first state championship! Click here to read about Triad High School's State Title!!

The girls are all heading their different ways this summer, here is how some of our Aggies will be spending their summer before heading back to Logan in August to start preseason!

Molli Merrill: I shall be living in logan, working, and hopefully soaking up some sun. If the sun ever decides to come out here

Kami Montgomery: This summer is going to be full of...well I don't know. I am moving to Ridgeland Mississippi (just outside of Jackson), and I will be working for Elite Security selling security systems. It is definitely a summer for the books my friends. Ha pray for me cause I'm sure things will get rough. No I'm only kidding. My two sisters will be living there with me because their husbands sell. I am beyond excited to finally get to spend a summer with my family. I have 3 nieces and 3 nephews so I will get to spend a lot of time with them. I will be coming back about week before August starts so wish me luck and I hope you all have a great summer! (if you wanna send me a package send me some hair defrizzer....with all the humidity who knows what will happen to my afro on top.

Hailey Anderson: yayyy (: summer!! im going on a cruise! (: it will be going to mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, and Puerto Vallarta. I'm going with my family and my boyfriend so that will be way fun. Also we are going to Lake Powell as a family for a week. My best friend is getting married, so i will be a bridesmaid at the end of July :) Basically i will just be crossing off my summer bucket list! that makes for a good summer (:

Alyssa Curtis: I am living at home with my family. Tons of rehab (from ACL surgery) and most excited for Lake Powell.

Shay Haddow: Well my summer won't be anything too exciting but what I am planning on doing is going home and playing state cup with my club team and hopefully going to Boise for regionals. I am going to try and get a job asap but I have no idea where yet. Hopefully I'll have time for a couple mini vacations and last but not least is working out and preparing for the fall :)

Last Saturday, the Utah State Soccer program welcomed back close to 40 alumni for our annual Alumni event. Before games began, the program honored two of its 10 year alumni from the class of 2000, Ashley Cracroft and Heather Cox. The alumni, current players, staff, and families of alumni and players had a great time! Thank you to all of the alumni who came out for the event! We hope to see you next year!

Boise Games!

The team headed up to Boise on April 16th for two games vs. Montana and Boise State. We came out with ties in both games with the only goal of the weekend scored by freshman Mari Miyashiro assisted by Shantel Flanary. On the way up to Boise, the team made bracelets for patients at Primary Children's hospital and inbetween our games, the team and families enjoyed a lunch in the backyard of sophomore Rachel Feuz's parents' home!

Whitesides Student-Athlete Banquet

The Whitesides banquet is a time to honor student-athletes at Utah State who have had high performance in the classroom. This year, Utah State honored 192 student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 GPA or higher over the past two semesters. 17 of our players were honored at the Whitesides Banquet and USU Soccer took 2nd behind Women's Track and Field for overall team GPA. Each student athlete was given a book called "5" which focuses on setting goals in their next pursuit for their future endeavors. Congratulations to our girls, and all of the other Whitesides honoree for their high performance in the classroom!

Ashlyn Mulford in Dancing with the USU Stars!

Sophomore Goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford was chosen as one of the participants in the annual Dancing with the USU Stars! She danced the Rumba, received a standing ovation from her team at the end of her performance with high marks from the judges scoring a 25 out of 30. Great job Ashlyn!

Wacky Small Sided!

Every spring, the team ends off the spring season with the annual Wacky Small Sided game. The team is divided into four groups, who then choose a theme for their team, and they arrive on the day of Wacky Small Sided making their grand entrances dressed as their chosen theme. This year, we had the shepherds herding their sheep, the "sisters with a mister," pantomimes, and the blue man group! After making their entrances, and taking pictures, the team plays in a small sided tournament in their costumes! It is always a day we look forward to and a fun way to finish off the spring!

Aggies Get Out into the Community!

Last Wednesday night, the team participated in a District 7 Soccer Academy for youth soccer players ages 4-8. The girls had a blast coaching, playing with and cheering on the kids. And the kids...well, let's just say they came home on cloud 9 with their t-shirts and jerseys autographed, and soccer balls from the Aggies after spending time with them! Women's Soccer Honored by University President's Wife, Joyce Albrecht

On Tuesday night, the women's soccer team was honored, along with women's volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, and cross country. Joyce Albrecht, wife of USU President, Stan Albrecht, held a reception in honor of the teams who had successes to celebrate this season. Women's Soccer definitely had a few successes, including winning their 2nd WAC regular season championship in three years!

Spring Game @ISU and USTARS

This weekend the Aggies play up at Idaho State at 11am! Come out and cheer on the Aggies if you're in the area!

On Tuesday night, the team attended the annual USTARS event at Utah State. The girls did a dancing skit starring Sophomore Goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford who played the ukelele, and Lauren Hansen won Best Female Athlete of the Year!

This Saturday, come on out and watch the team at UVU take on Utah Valley University at 11am and Southern Utah University at 2pm. The girls are excited to be getting back outside as the spring weather approaches...at least we hope!

Gift from Aggie Alum Serving Overseas

Kathy Konops is a USU Soccer Alumni who serves in the United States Air Force. A couple weeks ago, USU Soccer received a package in the mail from Kathy who is currently serving in Afghanistan. Included in this package is a combat patch that was flown over Afghanistan on a MC-130 back in her mission in September and was flown in honor of USU Women's Soccer. In the package, there was also a U.S. flag that was flown in Afghanistan in February of 2010 in honor of USU Women's Soccer. It is a great honor to be recognized and thought of by the men and women in the Armed Forces. We thank you Kathy for thinking of us, and again, we appreciate your service to our country!

BYU Indoor

The Aggies made a strong showing in their first set of spring matches at the BYU tourney this past Saturday. The team played three games and went through a shootout for BYU. The first game was against Westminster College, where the Aggies won 4-0 with two goals by Kendra Pemberton, and a goal each by Chandra Salmon and Mari Miyashiro. In the second game, the Aggies took on Weber State, winning 4-0 with two goals by Shantel Flanary and a goal each by Taryn Rose and Kendra Pemberton. The last game, the Aggies fell to BYU 1-0 and then fell in PKs to BYU 4-3. Despite the loss, the Aggies played well and the girls are looking forward to our next set of games on Saturday, March 26 at BYU.

USU Soccer Banquet

On Friday night, the Aggies celebrated their 2010 WAC Championship season in our annual soccer banquet. Players were recognized for the accomplishments this season, including Lauren Hansen, who broke two school records this year. Lauren was presented with the actual two game balls she broke the two records with. Those players who lettered received their letter awards, and members of the Utah State Athletics staff and other supporters were thanked and recognized. Other awards given were the team awards, which were presented to award winners by their teammates--

The highlight to the evening was surprising the girls with their WAC Championship rings. Coach Cairns had each player's ring put in a gift bag with her name on it, stapled shut. The bags were passed out and the girls opened their bags at the same time (see the video below!) The girls enjoyed taking pictures with their rings after the banquet! There were lots of laughs, some happy tears...it was a fun evening for all!

With over half of the seats reserved for the student body, and Wild Bill in his crazy costumes, the fans at Utah State are right up there with the Duke Crazies. It has been awhile since there has been a post because I (the blog author) have been on the road for ONE month! Now that the blog is up and running again regularly, here's a little trip down memory lane of favorite soccer memories from 2010 from a few of the girls and Coach Cairns:

Some "Off the Field" Memories from the Girls...

Julia Flores: "When we were trying to get Lo over the wall at the ropes course and Shio gave her a wedgie."

Lauren Hansen: "My favorite soccer game memory was Senior Day. Everything went perfect for me that day and having my family there was just amazing! A memory I will never ever forget. My favorite non game memory was during pre-season when we were running 120's on the football field at like 11 at night. And we had just ate Bajio for dinner right before. And me and Shio were running right by each other and burping up our Bajio the whole time. And laughing/crying while we were running the 120's cause we literally thought we were gonna die ha ha. We both collapsed when we were done. SO FUNNY!!"

Summer Tillotson: "When I made Coach believe that Spanish is the official language of San Jose."

Jamee Dyches: "When we got yelled at by the lady from her back window when we were juggling at the park on a court (at 8:30am on a Saturday morning)! I think it was in Cali somewhere but I'm not 100% sure."--it was in Santa Ana :)

Ellen Larsen: "2010 was a year FULL of soccer memories. One of my favorites was at the end of preseason this fall. It was the day before our first game, the weather was bad so we were just doing an easy walk through in the Laub. Well Chandra and I decided we wanted to pull a little prank. So we got coach in on it & told her that Chandra was going to "accidentally" wear the wrong color of practice shirt - which is never good. After warm-up Chandra threw her jacket off like she had no idea that she was wearing blue instead of gray. Automatically coach pointed out her mistake and told us all to get on the line right away! (That's just about the worst phrase a coach can ever say) From that point I joined in on my part and just started getting mad at Chandra, full on lecture about how she was being so irresponsible, that she should have seen that I was wearing a different color when we left our house, and most of all that this was ridiculous because she is a JUNIOR....i was such a jerk that Molli was more upset at me than at Chandra!! We all made our way to the line (while me "lecture" continued) and coach was going to make Chandra sit and watch the rest of us run as her punishment. Coach was explaining the running we would have to do - and everyone's jaw dropped because it would have been almost impossible running, SO hard! Right then Lo asked "well how many are we doing?" (never a good question) and all coach said was "I don't know Lo, I don't know" (NEVER a good response!)
But lucky for us right before coach would have started the running she asked Chandra if she was sure she didn't have the right color....which she then revealed that she had it on underneath!!! Everyone freaked out, it was great. People were relieved that my being so rude to Chandra (my best friend on the team) was all an act and ESPECIALLY that we didn't have to run!! I love my aggies!!"

Natalie Norris: "One of my favorite memories was the national park we went to in Louisiana for a run, it was gorgeous and so peaceful, I love it!!"

Alyssa Curtis: "My favorite memory was Marla trying to reverse the car for half a mile so we could see the Armadillo in Louisiana."

Coach Cairns: Making a guest appearance in the Bear Lake retreat skit as myself; Eating at the Hawaiian restaurant in SJSU and Mari having to tutor me on the menu (poke); The overtime win against Cal Poly; Winning another WAC regular season championship!!!

Salmon Earns Spot and Regional and National Scholar All-American teams!

Congratulations to Chandra Salmon. She was named to the Regional Scholar-Athletie All-America Team and has earned a spot on the National Scholar All-America Team! Chandra, aka "Fish," is the first Women's soccer player at Utah State to earn this honor. She is one of 35 players from all the Division I college soccer programs around the country to earn this honor!

WAC Tourney--The Players' Perspective!

Senior Heather Pond: They tourney was different this year. Its pretty hard to explain. Because it was my last year I didn't exactly know how to feel. The flight was awesome, a great way to go out. Soccer has been way fun the last couple years!!!

Junior Chandra Salmon: The flight was awesome! It took my parents an entire day to get home (to SLC) and we left after dinner and made it home (Logan) in time for 4th meal. The tournament game was a bust. I hate losing... but the trip was still fun. :)

Freshman Mari Miyashiro: My first trip to the WAC tournament wasn't as successful as I hoped it would be. But on the plus side, we didn't have to take 3 different planes just to get to Louisiana. Our own personal plane that flew directly out of Logan was definitely the highlight of the trip. The game didn't end up in our favor, but I think we played a heck of a game. If only we came out hard and strong like we did in the second half, it could have been a whole different game. In the end, it was a great experience and I can't wait to do it all over again next year!

Junior Marissa Sanchez: Being chartered to Louisiana was obviously a big highlight of the tournament, I felt like an extra special person, especially after hearing that David Beckham, Katie Perry, and Rhianna had all been on that plane previously! The flight attendant was such a sweetheart and on the way back she got us all chocolate. We even got to take pictures up in the pilot seats, felt a little closterphobic though, much smaller up there than I imagined it. The awesome part about the banquet was having so many of our teammates get awards.

Freshman Chelsie Sperry: The weekend in Louisiana was a blast! It was fun to experience the WAC tournament for the first time and travel with the team. The banquet was also fun to go to and the highlight of the weekend was probably taking a team picture with the trophy we brought home! It was way nice traveling on a charter flight as well and spending time with the best girls ever! I love our team :)

Junior Molli Merrill: All i have to say is the charter plane was amazing... now i know what it's like to be a football player

Freshman Hailey Anderson: The charter flight was amazing! Just the fact that David Beckham was in the plane made it that much better. The banquet was interesting, our team was was cheering during the slideshow of all the teams. We just have such great spirit (: and the gave us the dessert at the beginning of the meal which is genius. Plus they were brownies, so that was a bonus. We played so good the second half. We really gave it our all and played to the very end. It's sad we couldn't pull it off :(

Senior Weekend

It has been a busy two weeks for the Aggies! We honored our seniors last weekend with a luncheon and before our game on Sunday, played our game against Hawaii, then left Wednesday morning for the WAC Tournament in Ruston, Louisiana (flew a chartered flight right out of Logan....post coming in a couple days!).

Each year, the team holds a special luncheon just for the seniors where Coach Cairns gives a little background on their history at USU as well as some fun stories about each senior. The girls love dressing up and taking pictures with the seniors, and the luncheon ended with a highlight video, highlighting each senior's career at USU, and last words from each class to the seniors, and this year the seniors started a new tradition of last words from the seniors to each class!

On Sunday, the team played Hawaii...going into this game in 4th place in the standings. Anything could happen, and 2nd place was where we knew we could end up if we won, however, if other pieces fell into place, we also knew there was a possibility of finishing in 1st. ALL those other pieces fell into place combined with our win, we now share the WAC title with San Jose State! Another exciting piece of news was Lauren Hansen breaking two school records on Sunday (career points and career goals) with her hat trick in the first half, and assisting junior Shantel Flanary's goal in the second half!

The Aggies fell to Fresno State 1-0 in the semi-finals of the WAC tournament, finishing their season with a record of 9-7-5. It is also noteworthy to point out that in Utah State's last six years in the WAC, they have finished 2nd three times, and first twice...not a bad legacy being built by Coach Cairns, her staff, and the players! It's been a busy week for the Aggies! Despite dropping two WAC games to Fresno State (score 1-0) and San Jose State (score 4-1), the Aggies secured a spot into the WAC tournament in Ruston, Louisiana next week! This week, the Aggies had a bye today, which meant one extra day to prepare for the last home game on Sunday vs Hawaii at 1pm, when we will honor our three seniors, Lauren Hansen, Heather Pond and Stefani Shiozaki.

On another note, this season the Aggies had a new fan come cheer us on! Skylor Pond (pictured below) came to our games and cheered us on and the girls started telling him that he is our good luck charm! We honored Skylor after our game vs. Boise State by presenting him with a signed ball from the team and a t-shirt! We enjoyed Skylor's company and support, and look forward to seeing him at our games next year!

Aggies Undefeated in WAC Play!

With three games left in WAC play, the Aggies stand undefeated at 4-0-1 after beating Idaho on Sunday 2-0 and tying Boise State on Friday 0-0. Shantel Flanary put in two unassisted goals against Idaho on Sunday to help the Aggies rise to the first place spot in WAC standings. There are three games left in WAC play. This weekend the Aggies travel to northern California to take on Fresno State on Friday at 7pm, and San Jose State on Sunday at 1pm. With the help of the Aggie back line, Marissa Sanchez, Katie Crosland, Natalie Norris and Summer Tillotson, Junior goalkeeper, Molli Merrill, earned WAC Defensive Player of the Week as well as America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week, earning two shutouts this weekend against Boise State and Idaho.

Aggies Continue Strong in Four Game Winning Streak!

Aggies took on Nevada and Houston Baptist this weekend beating both teams 3-0. Lauren Hansen racked up four goals this weekend with Shantel Flanary scoring two of the six. Lauren is now tied for second for careers goals in the USU record books! Congrats to Lo!

This weekend the Aggies will take on Boise State on Friday at 3pm and Idaho on Sunday at NOON at home.

Craziest Traveling Weekend Ever

Natalie Norris gives a little blurb on the first weekend in WAC play
6 flights in 4 days. Talk about airplane sickness. We played in Ruston, Louisiana and Las Cruces, New Mexico this past weekend, but had quite an experience getting there. First we left Logan to drive down to the airport at 5:45 AM on Thursday morning which started the whole adventure off. We ended up having three layovers in Dallas, Texas, and a couple of drives to get to our actual location. We played La Tech Friday afternoon and started off conference with a 1-0 win. Saturday we flew out to El Paso, Texas and drove to Las Cruces where we spent the night. We played the next day against the 'Crimson Aggies' and beat them 3-0. It was a great start to conference with two wins and two shutouts and I think we all hope it will continue! Go Aggies!

With goals by Lauren Hansen, Katie Crosland, Kendra Pemberton, and Heather Pond, the Aggies had a strong weekend against La. Tech and New Mexico State. Molli Merrill and her defense earned two shutouts helping Molli be names WAC Defensive Player of the Week! The Aggies are at home the next two weekends against Nevada on Friday, Oct. 8 at 3pm, Houston Baptist on Sunday at 1pm, Boise State on Friday, Oct. 15 at 3pm and Idaho on Sunday at 1pm. Come on out and cheer on the Aggies in WAC play!

What Our Rookies Think of USU So Far!!

Moving to a new place....always exciting, scary, new experiences, etc...here's what some of our rookies have to say.

Jennifer Flynn: The biggest adjustment so far from high school to college is finding my own food to eat. I can never remember what I used to eat when I lived at home.

Mari Miyashiro: My biggest challenge so far has been adjusting to everything in Utah (people, food, language, etc). Coming from another state is hard especially when it comes to making friends. If it wasn't for soccer, I wouldn't have any friends. I also have to get use to the type of food that is here. A lot of the fast food restaurants (McDonalds, Taco Bell, Wendys, etc.) are the same but Utah definitely has more mexican food then Hawaii does. My parents still send up food from home :)

Chelsie Sperry: One of the best parts of being up here in Logan and going to college is just living on your own with a bunch of your friends and socializing. It's been way fun to meet so many new people and be able to have the chance to get to know a lot of the other student athletes during connections. My favorite thing my friends and I have done so far is swing dancing on Wed. nights. It's so much fun to go meet new people and just be in a great environment and dance to sweet country music!

Libby Lundquist: I have met so many new people and there is always something fun going on. Moving out and experiencing college life has been awesome and I love it. It is so fun to just be with everyone on the team. We have been through everything together so we have gotten to know each other so well and we can just joke and laugh about everything. Traveling has been really fun with everyone.

Kendra Pemberton: biggest challenge so far has been having any energy to do anything besides soccer and school; Biggest Adjustment so far from high school to college with School: Actually having to read the textbook and study. with Soccer: The time it takes up during the day and how tired it makes you. The best part of USU: The people. Everyone is really friendly and easy going.

Taryn Rose: The best part about USU and the soccer team is the girls. I instently fell in love with them they have made the transition so easy and i feel like i can go up to anyone . Especially with me being hurt its easy to feel left out but not with this team. We all come from being the best and the competition is hard but you have to love it. You cant go a day with out laughing.

Alison Williams: I expected it to be much colder when i got here. I arrived July 24th and was waring a sweater and jeans, and was really shocked about how hot it was. The best part of USU so far is having so many people to cook for all the time.

Katie Crosland: The best part of USU so far has been the team! It really is such a unique group of girls. Everyone really does have other's best interest in mind. The funnest thing I have done with my teammates is "geocaching".

Alyssa Curtis: Best thing about USU so far have been the campfires, bike rides, climbing, etc. up the canyon, biggest challenge has been being away from family and friends.

Aggies Fall in In-State Rivalry

The ladies showed strong this past weekend against Utah and BYU, but were unable to pull out a win. The Aggies took on Utah on Thursday night losing 2-1. The solo Aggie goal came from senior Lauren Hansen off of a cross from freshman Kendra Pemberton. Saturday the Aggies hosted No. 9 BYU and fell 3-0. Despite the loss, it was a good day to be an Aggie because of the way the girls played, some successful things they were able to do in the second half, and just the overall effort of the team. The team had several chances on goal and goalkeeper Molli Merrill had several saves throughout the game to keep the Aggies in it.

This coming weekend, the Aggies travel to Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State to start WAC play! Good luck ladies!

Currently the Aggies stand at 3-2-4 with two in-state rivalry games this weekend at Utah on Thursday at 7:30pm and then here at home on Saturday against BYU at 4pm.

Last weekend, the ladies and staff traveled to southern California where they fell to LMU 2-0 on Friday and tied UCR on Sunday 0-0. Sophomore goalkeeper, Ashlyn Mulford, recorded her first shutout bringing the Aggies to 4 shutouts this season.

Good Weekend for the Aggies!

This weekend the Aggies played two regionally ranked teams, Colorado College and Cal Poly SLO. The Aggies tied Colorady College with a PK with 45 seconds left in regulation, which was put away by Shantel Flanary. The Aggies beat Cal Poly SLO in overtime 3-2! Aggie goals were scored by Lauren Hansen, Shantel Flanary and Mari Miyashiro. Great job ladies!!! This weekend USU Soccer travels to Southern California to play Loyola Marymount and UC Riverside.

LBSU and SDSU

Last weekend, the Aggies traveled to Southern California to take on No. 24 Long Beach State on Friday and San Diego State on Sunday. We arrived in California on Thursday afternoon and had a light practice at LBSU followed by dinner in Belmont Shore and a quick walk down to the beach to enjoy the sunset! Friday rolled around, we arrive at LBSU geared up to play, and ended up scoring in the 4th minute off of a corner kick that Kendra Pemberton found the end of! We held the lead until half way through the second half when Long Beach scored off a free kick and then a few minutes later off of a through ball served over the top past our defenders. We ended up losing 2-1, however, it was the first time in Aggie Soccer history that we have led a top 25 team in a game!

On Saturday, we had a light workout in the morning, then headed down to Coronado Island where the Tillotson family opened their home to the team and the families who traveled. The girls enjoyed volleyball on the beach and an afternoon to relax a little before our Sunday game against San Diego State!

San Diego State was a tight game. We tied 1-1. We fell behind at the beginning of the 2nd half until Lauren Hansen poked the ball in the back of the net which took us into double overtime!

Despite the loss and a tie, it was still a strong showing for the Aggies! This weekend we are at home on Friday vs. Colorado College at 4pm and Sunday at 1pm vs. Cal Poly SLO.

Aggies Continue Undefeated at 2-0-1

After our win over Weber State, the Aggies defeated UVU at home 4-0 with two goals by Natalie Norris, and a goal each by Marissa Sanchez and Shantel Flanary. Freshman Kendra Pemberton recorded her first assist in her collegiate career when she crossed the ball to Shantel Flanary who headed it into the net. Freshman Mari Miyashiro also had a strong performance with two great chances on goal and created several other scoring opportunities of for the Aggies.

On Sunday, the Aggies traveled to Idaho State where they battled through double overtime for a 0-0 tie. Several of the Aggies had great scoring opportunities. With the help of her defense, Molli Merrill recorded her second shutout and was also named WAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Home Away From Home

"HOME AWAY FROM HOME" by Lauren Hansen

Once again we defended our "home" field at Rio Tinto on Friday night. It was a great game against a great in state opponent, Weber. It was a very intense and action packed game. We scored 2 great goals!! Marissa played a perfect throw in to me and I was able to cross it too Shani who had a sickkkk diving header that got the whole stadium on their feet! Then our high pressured defense gave me the chance to take a shot and score :) Everyone played a huge part in our game that made us come out on top! When we all play as a team and to the best of our ability we are unstoppable! The whole atmoshphere at Rio Tinto is a feeling that I will never forget!!! One of the greatest experiences and memories I will have for a lifetime :)

The Aggies had an exciting opening weekend beating Weber State 2-1 on Friday at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, and beating UVU 4-0 at home on Sunday! Then on Monday, the Coach Cairns surprised the girls with a team building activity. She took the team to the USU ropes course. The girls were challenged, taken out of their comfort zones and had a total blast! Blog posts coming soon!!!!

Summer is here! Some of our girls are headed home, others off on exotic trips, some are sticking around Logan...here's what some of our Aggies will be up to this summer!

Molli Merrill: "I am just planning on living in bountiful and working at scoreboard sports...and gettin my tan on."

Natalie Norris: "I decided to stay up in Logan for the summer with the rest of the cool kids who are staying up here too :) I'm planning on taking Human Physiology with a few other girls on the team, which includes a four hour lecture each week, disgusting I know, but hopefully we can survive. I also just got a job at the Children's Place with a Lo, HP, and Sammie which will be fun to work with them. We'll all be working out hard with Matt all summer long, so that'll be grueling, but definitely good. At the end of May I'm going back to my club team, Sparta, to play our last state cup together, which I will only be able to do half of due to my brother's graduation from the Air Force Academy. Other than that, I plan on working on getting rid of my fabulous soccer tan and having fun!"

Kelsey Sax: "I plan on continuing my work at Chickfila and perhaps taking up a second job. I will also be playing on the U19 CASL soccer team this summer. I will driving home (yes another cross country roadtrip) and then getting scuba qual'ed. I will then be going with my entire family (including myolder brother who has been on an LDS mission for two years) to the Caymun Islands where we will be staying at a house right on the beach. Literally right on the beach, the back yard is the beach and we will be scuba diving for an entire week. These are all my plans so far. Can't wait!"

Summer Tillotson: "I am spending a month in tanzania doing humanitarian work in orphanges and medical centers. I also plan on spending some time at my ranch in montana."

Lauren Hansen: "My plans are that I am going to go home for about 2 weeks to good ol' WA, they stay up here in Logan to partttyy it up :) haha just kiddin. Gonna soak up the sun and have a FUN time in Logan and work out hard. Have a fun time."

USU Most Outstanding Team Academic Award!

The girls have done it once again! Congratulations to USU Soccer for earning the Most Outstanding Team Academic Award today at the annual student-athlete Whitesides banquet where student-athletes from all sports at Utah State are recognized for their academic achievements. 15 of our individual players were also recognized for their academic achievement of maintaining a 3.2 GPA this year. One of the team goals set by the Aggies was to earn this team award as well as have the team do well individually in the classroom! Good job ladies! Keep up the good work!

Friday night, the Aggies fell to Utah 3-0. Despite the losses of our last three spring games, there have been several highlights to our spring season! We beat BYU 1-0 and Utah 2-0 at BYU's indoor and outdoor tournaments, as well as taking wins over Weber State and Dixie State, and ties with Westminister and Weber State at the BYU indoor tournament. We saw improvement overall in technical performance and team performance on the field, as well as off the field in the weight room and conditioning with our strength and conditioning coach Matt McManus. The girls also had some quality time off the field with the soccer class that Coach Cairns designed to do some team building and talk about topics to help with performance on and off the field as players and members of the community, and the girls also did several things together on their own initiative such as team dinners before the BYU and Weber game, they played intermural basketball, and this Thursday they are doing a team outing up the canyon making tin foil dinners and smores...the big exciting outing the girls took part in was a trip to Rio Tinto Stadium to watch the Women's National Team take on Mexico...with two inches of snow on the field! If you didn't get a chance to see that game, the U.S. won 1-0, making snow angels after scoring their goal! Another activity the girls participated in was Adopt-a-Team, a new program USU Soccer has implemented for the spring. Six teams, U10-U13, in the Cache Valley were adopted by USU Soccer and the girls went out to practices and games as mentors to the teams. In the fall, these six teams will have the chance to be our ball kids. Stay tuned over the next few days for a video/picture slideshow of our spring!!!!

Aggies Fall in Two Games down at ASU

Last weekend, the team went down to Arizona State University to take on NAU and ASU. The team fell to both teams losing to NAU 1-0 and ASU 3-0. One highlight of the weekend, despite the losses, was goalkeeper Molli Merrill got some field time for the last 10 minutes against ASU! Catch Utah State in their last spring game this Friday night at 7pm down at University of Utah!

The Wacky Small Sided tournament was yesterday and it marks the last training session of spring season...the girls broke off into their Aggie Olympic teams to form the cavewomen (Princess Warriors),80s fitness workout gals (Aggie Force) and the hillbillies (Die Hard). It was a fun day and Die Hard came out on top as the winners of the tournament!

After lifting heavy all week, the Aggies battled through sore legs down at BYU Outdoor to beat Dixie 2-1 and Utah 2-0. Lauren Hansen scored in the Dixie game with an assist from Heather Pond. Summer Tillotson came out strong in the Utah game and scored two goals in the first half with rocket shots from outside the 18. The assists on those goals were from Chandra Salmon and Lauren Hansen. Ashlyn Mulford and Molli Merrill shared the shutout in the Utah game. This weekend, the Aggies head down to ASU to play ASU and NAU! Keep up the good work Aggies!

50 Aggie Soccer Alumni Return for Alumni Day!

It was a great day for Utah State soccer on Saturday, February 20th. The program hosted Alumni Day where we had 50 alumni return to campus for a day of food, friends, soccer and a lot of fun! The alumni, who were able to play, were split into five teams and teamed up with the current Aggies to play against each other in back to back small-sided games! They played from 9am-3pm! We also honored four 10 year vets; Mackenzie Hyer, Emily Sutherland, Trisha Cracroft and Brittany Killian (unable to attend); meaning, they finished their last USU soccer season in 1999. These four alumni were the first four players to go through the program for four years, starting as freshman. It was a great day to recognize them for building the foundation of what the USU program has become today! We are all so very proud of sophomore goalkeeper Molli Merrill, who learned to dance the Samba in four weeks and performed it in front of a large crowd last night at the USU Dancing with the Stars. She went up against USU stars like Big Blue, Joyce Albrecht (wife of University President Stan Albrecht), and Mr. USU. There were 10 total competitors. Molli scored a 26 out of 30! Aggie Alumni Serving Our Country in Afghanistan

Kathy Konops is a 2002-2003 Aggie soccer alumni who is a 1LT and a navigator on a MC130P (click on the name of the plane for more info!) for the United States Air Force. Currently she is deployed in Afghanistan tentatively until the beginning of April. We all know that there is great sacrifice to both the American Soldier and their families as they serve our country. As fellow Aggies, let’s rally around Kathy and her crew and continue to support them in their mission in the Middle East.

Kathy says of her deployment, “I love it out here ... we are doing things that matter out here and have an impact on the war and those fighting the war... its a great feeling especially as a new nav and being in training for pretty much 3 years. I am on a crew of 8 (me included) and let me tell you every prayer helps everyday out here ... we are doing amazing things and it always helps knowing that we have people back home supporting us .”

Coach Cairns added to Kathy’s thoughts with this about Kathy, “Kathy has been training for her mission in Afghanistan since her years at USU. While here in Logan, she was able to balance playing soccer and participating in the Air Force ROTC program. Since then she has been receiving specialized training in navigation. I am so proud that I had the opportunity to coach such a great young woman, and I appreciate the sacrifice she is making for our country. I hope that the Aggie soccer alumni will rally around one of their own and keep her and her crew in their thoughts and prayers.”

Winter Break

It wasn't really WHAT I did over the vacation, but rather what I did NOT do! I did NOT get up early, I did NOT exercise my brain (other than some relaxing novel reading) and I did NOT do any dishes. Instead I ate way too much food, hung out with le boyfriend, and spent time re-getting to know my siblings since I am usually far away, and children grow at an alarming rate. Christmas was good to me, and I also spent time getting to know my new Nikon D40.

Roadtrip with Unexpected Twists by Kelsey Sax
Well not much happened over my break. I saw old friends and relaxed with family. I enjoyed homecooked meals and going out to the movies and lunch or dinner with friends. My life was not very exciting at all. I am however doing one 'exciting' thing. This thursday my friend (goes to Utah State as well) and I will be doing a roadtrip from North Carolina to Logan for school so I can have my car. I am sure it will be a lot of fun doing a cross country roadtrip across the country with one of my best friends....
(FOUR DAYS LATER...)
So the trip was more difficult than I thought it would be. We traveled through the worst storm that the east coast has seen in over a decade. It was below freezing. The moisture from our breath was freezing on the inside of the car. My windshield fluid froze and so we couldn't see out of my car and had to stop in Indiana which put us two hundred miles behind schedule. My windshield wipers were worn out and not really working so we replaced those the next day. We almost hit a deer and while driving through the mountains on I-80 we lost traction and almost began to drift but we later regained control and later we learned that my back tires were completely bald, But we made it here safely in logan around one today ((Sunday).

Even though season is over, the Aggies still see each other on a regular basis doing a lot of different activities together as a team to continue to bond as teammates and friends. With the holidays coming up, Ellen and Fish hosted a Thanksgiving party for the team, Danielle Shorts (our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative) headed up decorating a Christmas tree to donate to the community, and then we had our annual holiday party! The theme was Holiday movies, so the girls, if they wanted to, were to come dressed as their favorite holiday movie characters! The coaches decided on the Grinch Who Stole Christmas with Josh being the good Grinch who gets to cut the roast beef for the Who's of Whoville, Marla was Cindy Lou Who, and Heather was Max (the Grinch's dog!). Fish and Lo came as snowmen, Kami and Kelsey and Who's from the Grinch, Ellen as a present, and Nano dressed in red and white for the "Candy Cane Effect!" The party ended with a white elephant gift exchange...the coveted prizes....a kiddie bicycle and a kiddie basketball hoop! Happy Holidays from Aggie Soccer! Looking Back...Reflections of Lindsey Smart

Utah State Hey Aggies all the way, Go Aggies, Go Aggies, Hey Hey Hey! I remember my die-hard Aggie dad chanting this cheer to me in high school when he told me to consider Utah State University for soccer. At first, I wasn’t too interested in cold, little Logan, but looking back on my years as an Aggie I would not trade my experience here for anything.

Of course there were a lot of rough times; like the hard running days……..the practice this past preseason on the HPER field definitely comes to mind (everyone knows which one I am talking about!). Or the practice after Bear Lake when we were doing a lot of 120s and Lo and Syd decided to use one of their free 120s and got yelled at, ha ha I will never forget that. There have also been very frustrating times with injuries, especially when my calves were bad. However, all these hard times made the good times even better and made it all worth it. Having wonderful teammates helped everyone push through the hard times.

I will miss going on road trips with the girls, eating double the amount of calories than we burned, juggling dessert competitions, Goalie wars……sorry coach I mean 2 vs. 2 competitive shooting (Though I will not miss Lo and Mollie kicking the ball as hard as they possible could). I will miss the pillow fightsJ, laughing uncontrollably in the back of the bus with the fantastic five, playing tricks on Lo, and a bunch of other memories that are too numerous to list. The thing I will miss the most is definitely just playing soccer at a high competitive level and fighting for each other on the field while working towards a common goal. Not to mention having fun and kicking butt, while doing it! Two of the best memories that come to mind were winning the WAC conference last year and going undefeated, and beating UTAH at Rio Tinto stadium. Playing on that field in front of so many fans was unreal and one of the funnest games I have ever been apart of!

Looking back at my first collegiate soccer game as a freshman compared to where I am now, I cannot believe how fast it flew by. Though the wins and losses will be forgotten, the friendships I have made, the things I have accomplished, and the countless memories will last forever! Thanks to all my teammates who made it so much fun and worked so hard, the coaches for giving up their personal lives to do so much for us and USU soccer, and trainers (Hillary you are the best). You all made the experience so awesome! I love you!!! GO AGGIES!!

Reflections.....of a Senior: Erin Salmon

Soccer has been my entire life and I am so grateful for the opportunity that I had to play at a college level. Not only did I get to play at a college level but I got to play at Utah State University. I don’t even know where to start with the memories and experiences I have had in my last four years, there are so many!

The first memory that comes to mind that I will never be able to forget was freshman year when I made the entire team run. First I got screamed at by coach and then after that I got yelled at by the scariest senior on the team. I have never felt so stupid in my entire life but I am happy to say that after my four years I am not the only freshman that this happened to.

My two favorite memories would have to be obviously winning the WAC Jr. Year and also senior year playing at Rio Tinto and beating Utah!! We seniors have always wanted to beat Utah and it was such a great feeling and opportunity to beat Utah our senior year and playing at Rio Tinto made it that much better!! Winning the WAC was such a great experience the whole entire season was a blast I enjoyed it every step of the way!

The only year I forgot to write about was sophomore year and how could I forget this year because this is the year that brought so much joy and laughter to my life…can anyone guess why? ……. Hello!!!! I got to meet Lo and Shio!! I am sure every girl that plays on this team while these two girls are here will have so many great fun memories to talk about for the rest of their lives. Thanks Lo and Shio I love you guys!!

I could go on forever about memories and experiences but it would be a novel. I am so grateful for the opportunity I have had here at Utah State to play soccer. The girls that have come and gone on this team will be my friends for life! I love all of them and will never forget them. I had the amazing opportunity to come into this experience with two of my best friends and it couldn’t have been a better ending then to be able to end it with them. I am grateful for the coaches and all they have done for me. They were very patient with me because I had to come back from so many injuries and I am so grateful that they didn’t give up on me. I am sad to say it is over but I will never forget my experience playing Utah State Aggie Soccer!!!! GO AGGIES!!!! I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!

WAC Tourney

Last week, the Aggies traveled to the WAC tournament in Boise, Idaho. The tournament kicked off Wednesday night by a banquet honoring seniors and award winners throughout the conference. Our girls were a good looking group and represented Utah State well as three Aggies, Lauren Hansen, Summer Tillotson and Chandra Salmon were recognized for earning Athlete of the Week during the season; three more Aggies, Chandra Salmon, Lindsey Smart and Shantel Flanary, earned 1st Team All-WAC honors; and last but not least, Shantel Flanary was honored as the Offensive Player of the Year! Because we finished 2nd in the WAC, we earned a bye for the first round of the tournament. We played Boise State on Friday in wet, cold conditions, and lost in a close 1-0 game. The Aggies were represented well again in post-tournament honors with Sophomores Molli Merrill and Shantel Flanary being named to the WAC All-Tournament team. Congratulations to the coaches and players of the 2009 Utah State Soccer Team for a successful season! Stay tuned for reflections from the season from your Aggies!

Busy and exciting weekend for the Aggies! Detailed posts coming soon! We went 2-0 this weekend beating Louisiana Tech on Friday 2-1, qualifying us for the WAC tournament, and today, we beat New Mexico State 3-0 to secure a 2nd place finish in the WAC and earn the 10th win of the season! Conference tournament will be held in Boise next week. The Aggies earned a first round bye and will be playing on Friday. We also appreciated our parents (formally), celebrated Halloween, and honored our seniors! Again...a more detailed post coming soon!

Bitter-Sweet Weekend in Hawaii

The team began the lovely trip to Hawaii with a 6 hour plane ride. Yes, this does sound terrible, however, on the flight we had a variety of movies to choose from and I had Sammie next to me laughing the whole time during The Hangover, so that kept me entertained as well. Oh and how could I forget Marla's delicious bags of goodies she made for each one of us (which was consumed within 2.5 seconds). So after many movies were watched and tons of food was eaten, we landed in the wonderful state of Hawaii. Yes people were excited, but I think I may have over reacted only because I've never been there before. Besides the smell of fish along the way, my first thought of Hawaii was HALLELUJAH, I love this place since there wasn't any snow, and the weather was above 45 degrees (unlike Logan).
After we finished checking into the rooms, we went on a lovely jog. Two words, HOLY HUMIDITY. After the jog that that made us look like we jumped into a pool, we went and ate at Outback. After consuming 65847 calories (personally) we got to walk around for a little bit and I was able to see the beach, which actually has clear water.
The next morning was quite funny actually. Since the time change was so different and we slept for so long, almost everyone was pretty hungry when they woke up. On the way down to breakfast I said to Sammie, "Oh my gosh I don't even really like breakfast food, but I can't wait to eat. I am so hungry". So as we all gather down in the lobby, Josh tells us that we'll just be eating the continental breakfast over at IHOP, which was a little upsetting since the IHOP menu look so good, but I think we were just excited to eat food. And when you think continental breakfast you usually think cereal, eggs, muffins, fruit, bread, etc. So as we go over to breakfast and enter in the room to our surprise we see our breakfast.... Apples, mangos, and danishes. Our hopes of a BIG breakfast had gone out the window. So after eating 10 apples and 4 danishes (whatever made everyone full) we went to practice.
After practice we went and got smoothies and then went back to the hotel where we were free to do what we wanted. Of course everyone wanted to go shopping and go to the beach. So Jamee, Marissa, Mollie and myself all went to the beach, however, on the way there we had to do some shopping of course. Jamee wanted to go into unrealistic stores such as Chanel and Gucci while the rest of us decided to stay within our price range and go to the International Market. The workers there pounce on you like prey. If you take one look in their direction at what they are selling, they will come up to you and ask you what you'd like to buy. I wasn't use to this and felt bad saying no, so I pretty much ended up buying all of Hawaii ( according to sammie). After spending some money, we finally went to the beach hoping to maybe get rid of our cute soccer tans. It didn't work out so well, but the beach was very very, very nice. After the beach we decided to get henna tattoos on the way back to the hotel. Which everyone's turned out great, except for mine. Mine is translucent pretty much, and Mollie's is struggling a little bit due to Jamee grabbing her wrist (where she got the tattoo) right after she got it. Then when everyone got back to the Hotel we went to a Japanese Steak house where they make the dinner right in front of you. DELICIOUS. So much food was consumed and it was a lot of fun watching them make the dinner in front of you while doing some crazy stuff with the knives and food. Since Shio's birthday was the next week, she got a cake brought out to her at dinner and we all sang her HAPPPYYYY BIIIRTTHHHHDAYYYYY. Once dinner was over we all went back to the hotel and went to sleep. While Shio and others passed out left over cake to homeless people on the street (such a good idea).
The next morning was not only GAMEDAY, but we got to eat at IHOP! Hooorrayyy! Those that were going to church got up a earlier and went and ate then we went to the prettiest church I have ever seen in my entire life. Everyone was very nice there and we even met some people that had gone to Utah State before. When the team gathered back together, we backed up and went to a Swap Meet at the stadium. At the swap meet they had different vendors with a variety of stuff that was sooo cheap. Which is always a plus(: After the swap meet, we went and ate at Chilis for a pregame lunch and then headed to the fields. In the locker room, we were greeted with cockroaches and other bugs. Once everyone flixed there had about twenty times and we listened to the pregame music we were ready to beat the Wahinies. To our disappointment, we lost the game 3-1. Finally, once everyone showered we got in the car and headed to airport to take a red eye back to cold cold cold Logan. Adios Hawaii ( wait that was spanish).

Good to be Home

It felt good to be back home after spending nine of our last ten games on the road! This weekend was an exciting one for the Aggies! The Aggies are now 3-1-1 in conference, 8-7-2 overall, putting them third in conference standings underneath San Jose State and New Mexico State. On Friday, Lauren Hansen scored the winning goal to give the Aggies a win over Fresno State. On Sunday, Shantel Flanary scored within the last four minutes of the game to bring the game to a 1-1 tie with San Jose State! Next weekend, the Aggies travel to Hawaii (such a bummer) to take on University of Hawaii!

On a side note, Aggie Women's Basketball teamed up with Aggie Soccer for a fun tailgate before the football game. There was food from Pounders and Chilis, as well as two pinatas filled with candy! The girls had a good time and the two teams made formal introductions so they could get to know each other. After the tailgate, the girls went to the football game, where Utah State lost to Nevada 35-32. :(

Congratulations to Chandra Salmon, who earned WAC Defensive Player of the Week! Chandra made a strong contribution to the Aggie's win over Fresno State on Friday and tie over San Jose State on Sunday making several huge defensive plays for the team in both games!

Congratulations to Coach Heather Cairns who was recognized and honored by Joyce Albrecht, the wife of Utah State's president, at the annual Women's Athletic Luncheon. Coach Cairns was honored for her success with the Women's Soccer team at Utah State and for her dedication and love for Aggie Athletics!
